Bearing Witness: Advent Guide Week 2

Posted by Brandon Rodgers on

John 1:7 says "He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him."

Brief Explanation:

The Jews anticipated a Messiah who would save them. This Messiah would be a beacon of hope for the Jews and lead them to freedom from Roman rule. Many Jews thought John the Baptist was this Messiah. Jesus even declared John to be the greatest man born of a woman (Matt. 11:11). The Jews heard John preach and wanted John to be the Messiah, but in God’s plan he was merely the one who pointed to the true Messiah, Jesus Christ. Application to Advent: Jesus came into the world like a bright light in a dark room revealing God’s glory more clearly than ever before.

According to Genesis 1:26-27, we were created as image bearers of God. That means we are like mirrors that reflect Christ’s light into the world. How are you reflecting God’s light during this Advent season? Think of ways you can point people to the light of Christ.

Lord, You are the Light of the World. You came into the darkness of this world and brought hope. In the same way, You came into my life and brought hope, peace, and joy into the darkness of my heart. Thank You for loving me and this world enough to send Your Son Jesus to this world to make our relationship right with You once again. Lord, help me reflect Your light into my family, friends, and circles of influence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Make some Christmas cookies or take a meal to a neighbor you do not know well, one who does not go to church or is not a Christian. Use this as a way to give a practical gift and build a relationship with them. Talk to your family about being on mission for Jesus as you prepare and give the meal/cookies away.
