God’s ideal way of changing us is to have us read the Bible to find out how we should live and then depend on his indwelling Spirit to enable us to do it. Unfortunately, most of us are stubborn, and we don’t change very easily. So God brings a tool to work on us, as in my case, circumstances. We learn in those circumstances that God works “in all things for good to those who love Him and have been called according to His purposes.” (Romans 8:28)
It seemed to be a smart idea to work in a foreign country on an exciting, very high paying job that provided all the comforts and material things my family needed; but the downside was it did not provide for me to be a full time husband and father. The job also kept me away from attending church. Therefore my spiritual relationship with God was not what it should be. I knew this, but I was not willing to change my priorities until an illness of one of my children gave me no choice but to come home. Because of that circumstance, I came home to my family and got my life in proper order.
God tells us He will fit any circumstance into His great plan for our life in order to make us more like Jesus Christ. We often bring problems on ourselves and our families by faulty decisions, bad judgments, and improper priorities. So there is no circumstance in life from which we cannot learn if we will just have the right attitude.
